Hankook Machine Tools Co.'s VTB/VTC vertical lathe series is designed for use by large component manufactures. Available in single column, double column and cross-rail elevating types, the single-cast high-quality construction ensures stable and secure operation. C-axis control for a variety of machining needs and ATC and APC functions enable easy compatibility with automated systems and increase productivity. The vertical lathes have a maximum turning diameter of 850 to 8000 mm and maximum turning height of 850 to 3000 mm. Maximum workpiece weight is 60 tons, with a table diameter of 530 to 5000 mm depending on specifications. In addition to vertical CNC lathes, the company manufactures horizontal lathes, multi-purpose lathes, roll-turing lathes, double column machining centers and other high-quality industrial machinery. Key to achieving the solution was the ability to machine the adapter in one clamping, rather than two, using a bespoke two-jaw chuck that allows sufficient clearance at the back for the component to be turned on the reverse end using a special tool that accesses the back face through the bore. |

A conventional production arrangement of horizontal turning centres is face-to-face, with one operator working both machines. In the same floor space, three vertical turning machines can be arranged in a ‘U’ shape and operated by one person. If those verticals are twin-spindles, that’s six chucks tended by one operator. But this is just one reason why manufacturers specialising in the production of automotive components are increasingly opting for verticals. A vertically configured turning centre also lends itself to automated workpiece delivery, predominantly because conveyor systems are on the same plane as the machine chuck, simplifying machine load/unload. A case in point can be witnessed at the Cardiff plant of Bosch Miskin, which is dedicated to the machining Vertical turning machines are becoming increasingly popular in the automotive sector, delivering benefits such as high volume production, automation and efficient use of space. By Steed Webzell Vertical lathes on the up of automotive stator assemblies, producing around 4 million units a year. |
